I saved a little time by washing and hulling the strawberries the night before. The sudden appearance of winter has meant we’ve been a little slow in prying ourselves out of bed, and I’ll look for any excuse to linger a bit longer. I subbed plain soy yogurt for the regular yogurt, since I’m just [...]

This vase originally came from a lovely bouquet Devon sent to me at work awhile back. I’m working on my stencil etching because I want to use the technique to make Yule ornaments this year. The supposedly reusable stencil tore after the first use, which made me cranky, but I’m pretty happy with the results.

Sometimes, a spice mill just isn’t cool enough. That’s why Devon is building an electric spice mill powered by a hand drill. He tested it out by drying and grinding these jalapeno peppers. He cut off the stems and ends of the fresh peppers, diced them and let them dry in a 200 F oven [...]

The streusel topping is what makes these muffins almost like dessert. You could skip it if you’re pressed for time, but it adds a nice flavor and texture, so don’t be a lazy punk. The recipe is from the Betty Crocker Cookbook. I flip through it often because it’s full of recipes with ingredients I [...]

With Devon getting his geek on over the weekend in Texas, I decided to spend Sunday with Mom and Dad. Mom is looking and feeling a lot better these days. Three major surgeries over the past year have aged her quite a bit, and she may never be as strong or as mobile as she [...]

We had some ground turkey left over after making the stuffed peppers, so I made turkey meatballs. These meatballs will meet their fate in a meatball sandwich, which is why I wasn’t so concerned with actually making them round.
The recipe came from the Betty Crocker Cookbook, but you don’t really need one. Put 1 pound [...]

With the haul of apples we brought home from the orchard in Freehold, I decided to make some applesauce. The kind I find in the store is usually too watery, and I like mine a little chunky. I got this recipe from Betty Crocker’s Cookbook, and I modified it slightly. This recipe is one of [...]

We have officially launched our plan to do one recipe from each Good Eats episode. This one is Mashed Potatoes. My favorite mashed potatoes are my mother’s, and she breaks all the rules: She beats the hell out of them until they are a gluey mess, and, frankly, they are awesome. These are also excellent, [...]

Devon’s breakfasts are turning into epic-level monsters to be slayed by level-four characters. If you understood that, welcome, my geeky friends! This one was a fried egg over potatoes.
We topped this off with some of Ellen’s awesome peach jam on toast. It’s good to know people who like giving good food away.
